Oh my. Where did professionalism go??

I want to start by thanking the miserable human who inspired me to write about professionalism and kindness.

We are living in a sad time, where manners, professionalism and basic kindness have been forgotten. Now, I am most certainly not saying this is everyone. There are still lovely, exceptional people in the world, but rudeness seems to be an epidemic these days.

I have decided that for better or worse, I am going to get my writing out into the world. All I can do is try.

Getting no response is very common and that's fine. I appreciate completely that large publications can't possibly reply to everyone, but today I received a response that absolutely shocked me. The unnecessarily rude, not to mention grammatically poor, response, by a Senior Editor nonetheless, disgusts me.

No one of any stage or age in this life, or any level of writing, deserves the above response. I have to believe this woman is very discontented with her life and perhaps these words aren't her norm. Regardless, she should be ashamed to have treated another human with such disrespect.

I accept completely that my writing style, or choice of topic, may be completely ill-suited for this maritime publication, but a polite rejection would have been the more appropriate response.

My mom used to say that manners and professionalism were a dying art and should be taught in school. She was right. I think it's time I open a school in her honor and the first student can be Ms. Miserable herself.
