Generations and stereotypes
Sitting chatting with my 17 year old son, waiting for a dentist appointment, he asked me what generation I was from. I looked at him and kind of laughed. I honestly didn't know, because I didn't think it mattered to me.
A Millennial?! Excuse me?! No. I don't dress like that, act like that, have THOSE ideals. Hilarious. Turns out I had some pretty significant feelings about which generation I was in afterall and honestly, I was embarrassed by my own reaction, stereotypes and judgements.
I had immediately pictured men with buns, pointy shoes, skinny jeans, and an artsy, free-love kind of vibe. What is that about and why was it attached to a specific gender?! Huh.
Millennials are 1981-1996. We're anywhere from 27 to 42. For that range, we are in dramatically different stages in our lives. To place an all-encompassing stereotype on that generation is laughable. So, please forgive me.
All of these thoughts got me thinking in an even broader scope-why judge at all?! What is good for you may not be good for me. What you like, I may loathe. What tastes good to me may taste absolutely vile to you. What has me laughing until I snort may seem rude, boring or simply bland. We are all different and that's such a beautiful thing! Not even the most identical twins are truly identical. Being different and sharing our unique-selves with the world is what makes life interesting!
I may not understand your wardrobe choice, but if it makes you happy-rock that shit! Do what makes you happy, as long as it isn't hurting you or others. Be YOU! The world needs YOU!
So, on this chilly, November 7th day, I vow to judge less, to accept more and try REALLY hard to accept that as far as society is concerned, I'm a Millennial and that's ok.
And, I am considered a Boomer - a group with which I have so little in common other than age
