Spread some kindness
Lately I have been more sensitive to remarks, towards me and definitely towards my children. Not only am I more sensitive, but I find myself really considering what the remark truly means and why a person would choose to be so unkind.
The past few years have been rough ones, on a global level. The Pandemic alone was enough. We have learned to exist as individuals, or in our "bubbles", and have forgotten how to exist as a good community member.
It has gotten to the point where kindness is not the norm. Where good customer service, accountability, manners, respect and all kinds of things are no longer "common" sense.
We are living in a world where people no longer quit jobs, they simply stop going. I can't even imagine just ceasing to show up for work, without an extremely good reason.
I'm worried for what the world is becoming. For what my kids are growing up in. I know I am teaching them good values, manners and all the things I hope they choose to employ in their lives, but will they be able to keep being kind and good when they are constantly surrounded in such unnecessary rude and indifferent attitudes??
How is it acceptable behaviour to order take-out right into school? Have earbuds in during class? Disrespect teachers? Show up late or not at all? Why do so many children simply not care about the most basic of behaviors?! How are we failing this generation so horribly?!
Social media and smartphones have been absolute poison. People sit down for family meals and are more interested in some reel about bullshit "facts" than they are about their present company. No, I don't care that so and so invented a new dance! No, I don't care about lip gloss that is so reflective you need sun glasses to look at. STOP EXISTING FOR YOUR PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT'S HAPPENING RIGHT INFRONT OF YOU! You are missing out on the good stuff! You are missing out on what actually matters and what you can't get back-time!
I know I am not alone in my feelings. Every chat I have with friends or family lately seems to circle back to this.
I will continue to be kind, thoughtful, courteous, and make sure to pay all of the deserved compliments, even when there is a lot to complain about. Complaining won't solve this epidemic anyway.
Today, and everyday, try to be kind. Try to be polite. Try to hold the door open when you can, and offer a smile. Life is freakin hard and this time of year can be particularly hard on people. People are alone, hungry, can't afford even the simple things... Your small, or large, act of kindness can be life changing for a person. Don't forget the power kindness has! It can truly start with a smile and those my friend, are free!
