Rant-October 31, 2026
Lately I have been noticing a whole lot of unnecessary judgements about people's outward expressions. I realize social media has always had trolls, but it seems like they are more present than ever. Do people just have too much time on their hands? Why do people care so much about someone's make-up, or lack thereof? Their colourful outfit or oversized sweatsuit? Their hobby of knitting, Dungeons and Dragons or collecting rocks? Why do people want to complain about everything constantly? (She says while complaining.)
On the phone with my daughter the other day, she was telling me a story about someone who was shitty to her and then tearfully said, "Why can't people just be nice?" Fantastic question, kid! Why can't we just be nice, or at minimum keep our judgemental, non-supportive thoughts to ourselves? It takes guts to share our stories, hobbies, and interests with the world. If you don't like what you see, look away. If they aren't hurting themselves or someone else, it's not your concern. If you think it's your concern, then you need to find yourself a new hobby.
It shouldn't be brave to be authentic. It should be the norm. I want to show up fully as myself and I want you to do the same. We'll mesh, or we won't, and that's ok. It should not only safe to be yourself, it should be what we naturally do in society, but instead, we conform or criticize.
It's really easy, especially in the current state of the world, to get so bogged down by negativity. There are a lot of unimagineably awful things going on everyday, but you know what else is going on? Unimagineably good and kind things! People are commiting big and small acts of kindness every single day! People are helping others, showing up, giving of themselves and truly wanting to be a positive light in the world, but how often do we shine the light on those people?
You know what would be amazing? Sharing all the things that went right about our days, instead of the one thing that went wrong. Being grateful shouldn't be a movement. It should be the norm. When you focus on the positive, you see more positive. I used to think that was crazy talk, but it's not. Think about when you bought your car. Did you magically start seeing the same car everywhere, as if everyone suddenly went out and bought your same car? Of course you have! What you are tuned into is what you notice in the world.
In recent months, partly out of being so busy, I have really squirelled away with my family. They are definitely my happiest place, but being out at a holistic fair today really reminded me of the goodness out there that I have been missing out on. I had a couple of amazing conversations, with such like minded people that it reminded me that hiding from all the crap in the world isn't a solution. In all honesty, even the grocery store, with all the shocking prices, is a bummer lately. I am so disgusted with so much of what is happening in the world and I seem to be getting a bigger than normal dose of it all lately. Then I go to this fair and immediately feel lighter. I looked around the large room and saw nothing but friendly faces. I was exactly where I was supposed to be in that moment. There are still so many good people in the world, I just think sometimes we need something like that fair to remind us of it.
Instead of judging others, what if you tried authenticity and focusing on your own expression? What if you were so busy focusing on what was good about your day that the bad stuff carried less weight? What if you literally stopped to smell the flowers, notice the sunset or appreciate the many marvels around you? We can't control eveything in our life, but we can control how we are showing up in it.
Be kind and then, be even kinder! Do good things and then do more of them! I want my kids, and yours, to live in a friendlier world. It's time for change.
That was a lot of scattered ranting. It has been a almost exactly 1 year since I typed out my thoughts. I think it's time to recommit. I have missed it.
